Assess Prior Knowledge

In a small group make two lists on a large sheet of paper:
  1. What you think you know about detection of particles.
  2. Questions that you have about detection of particles, or ideas that you aren't sure about.
You need to know these before you go further:
  1. What are two characteristics of a particle that you can determine from its track in a magnetic field? Check the Helmholz coil apparatus or OnScreen software.
  2. What kind(s) of particle(s) is/are very difficult or impossible to detect? Why?
  3. How can you find the mass of a particle from its tracks in a magnetic field if you know its energy/momentum? What is the mathematical relationship? Remember what you learned about this in the basic project and in OnScreen.
