These questions concerning big concepts may help you decide what to investigate about detectors:

  1. What main characteristics of a particle are determined by a detector? How?
  2. What concepts of basic physics are used to identify particles in different parts of detectors?
  3. Can you identify the particles in these events? Challenge 12, Challenge 13.

More detailed questions to investigate:

  1. How are these used to detect and identify particles: ionization, Cherenkov radiation, calorimeters, silicon detectors, photo-multiplier tubes, old bubble chambers?
  2. How can we detect something that doesn't exist long enough to leave a detectable track or that doesn't leave any track in a detector?
  3. How do the magnets differ in different detectors? Why?
  4. Do particles decay in a recognizable pattern?
