Investigating Detectors

ATLAS detector
The ATLAS detector, currently being built for the LHC accelerator at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
Particle detectors have grown from a hand-held cyclotron to those several stories tall. Each layer of a detector is designed for certain tasks. Millions of collisions happen every second, but the interesting data are saved for examination later.

We will use standard topics in physics to understand more about how detectors work. We will investigate how particles can be identified and characterized, and using actual data and event pictures, we will learn to identify some particles.
