Fermilab QuarkNet Institute 2000 Program

Primary Goal of the Institute: To introduce teachers to particle physics, both experiment and theory and provide instructional tools to use in the classroom.


General format of a typical day at Niles West High School:

10:15 AM - 10:45 AM: Coffee & discussion

Week 1:

  1. Particle physics in general
  2. Standard Model & current hot topics
  3. Experiments
  4. Learn basic techniques
  5. Set up cosmic ray experiment & perform simple cosmic ray measurements, such as cosmic ray muon angular distributions, etc.

Week 2:

  1. Two tours to Fermilab on Monday and Tuesday, June 26 & 27
  2. Perform cosmic lifetime measurements
  3. Learn about our QuarkNet Web site and use of the information on the page
  4. Presentations of measurements, including interpretations
  5. Write-up of the group reports
  6. Summary and wrap-up
