QuarkNet Fellows

In order to enhance the capacity of QuarkNet staff to deliver professional development, we are creating a cadre of teacher-leaders to assist in the planning and delivery of a variety of professional development activities for other QuarkNet teachers. Teachers will participate in a leadership program including an initial intensive one-week workshop in summer 2007 with a follow-on program of shorter in-person sessions and regular e-communication discussions. The cohort will inform its ongoing design process with active evaluation of the activities. We will disseminate "lessons learned" in several ways: share informally with other QuarkNet centers, submit to peer-reviewed publications and attend conferences.

Travel Arrangements: Contact Gayle Millman to arrange transportation and hotel reservations. Let Gayle know if you are willing to drive a car for the group. Do this ASAP.
Please note the airline tickets we purchase are NON-refundable. You may be required to reimburse QuarkNet should you have to cancel your reservation.

Arrival/Departure: Out-of-town fellows will arrive the day before the first workshop session. We expect everyone to be on hand for a welcome session after dinner. Fellows may depart at the end of the last session (sessions end at 5:00 PM) or on the following day.

Graduate Credit: The 3-semester-hour NSM 5004 - QuarkNet Teacher Fellows graduate course will be offered at Fermilab July 9-15 or July 14-20 from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. The tuition fee is $225 ($75/hour x 3 graduate semester hours).

Each teacher will fill out a course registration form and make tuition check payable to Aurora University (no checks or credit cards accepted) on the first day of class.

Brief course description: QuarkNet Teacher Fellows offers participants four different paths in a collaborative environment that is designed to both challenge and provide leadership opportunities. All four paths offer opportunity for individual learning as well as collaborative work that will lead to workshops for other teachers. The threads include: Teaching and Learning, Cosmic Ray Detection, the Large Hadron Collider and Virtual Collaborative Learning.
